Research Projects

Multiple funded projects have informed the research approaches documented through this Portal, involving an extensive network of institutional partners across Australia, Asia and Europe.

Design practice research: uncovering the role of spatial intelligence in designing and in reviewing design of the built environment.

ARC Discovery Project (2011-2014)

This project identified and analysed spatial intelligence as deployed by Architects, Landscape Architects and Urban Designer practitioners. It explored improvements and invention of new design policies and design procurement procedures which are informed by deeper understandings of Spatial Intelligence.

ADAPT-r ITN – Architecture, Design and Art Practice Training-research.

European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (2013 – 2016)

This project aimed to develop a robust and sustainable European practice research training network across a range of design and arts disciplines. ADAPT-r ITN trained new researchers, increased supervisory capacity, created partnerships with SMEs in research projects, provided substantial opportunity for real-world testing of the research and real-world training, and introduced practice research methodologies to a new generation of practitioners.

DAP_r (Design and Architecture Practice Research) is an inter-institutional research project examining doctoral training in design and architecture.

Office of Learning and Teaching Project (2016 – 17)

A collaboration of 14 Australian universities led by RMIT, this Commonwealth-funded project brings together partners from across design disciplines with the aim of mobilising the adoption of a practice-based approach to doctoral training.
